New Smyrna Beach Middle School is set for the Spring Gardening Startup.

CSI Natural decided earlier in the year that the most important part of our "Contribution Program" was to educate the youth about the importance of growing their own food, at home. Although, the question remained, "How do we educate the youth about producing food when we have no direct affiliation with the Volusia County School District?" The answer soon appeared and after very little effort, CSI Natural is more involved than ever before.

After the screening of a movie titled "Dirt" shown at ACA earlier this year, CSI Natural was introduced to Mr. Will Smith at the New Smyrna Beach Middle School. Mr. Smith , who heads up the Agriculture Department, was more than willing to accept the contribution of CSI Natural Spent Compost for the students Spring Garden. Not at all sure of what the plan was, Mr. Smith worked with his students to generate some very interesting solutions using only found objects or donated construction materials.

Mr. Smith and the students worked at a nice steady pace to generate their own fruits and vegetables during school hours. Realistically, the outcome was amazing! From nothing, Mr Smith and his students managed to start a series of raised-bed gardens that not only gifted the students with a thorough understanding of backyard gardening techniques but motivated some to take the knowledge home in order to begin their own projects.

After constructing the grow spaces, the students planted the seeds and after a short while, life was beginning to blossom and vegetables are growing in the most unique raised-beds CSI Natural has come across to date. Some of you may know that gardening from seeds takes a greater amount of care and these students persevered in more ways than one.

As a resident in the community for more than 40 years, CSI Natural is eager to contribute in every way possible. Volusia County Schools motivate our youth and the results are simple, eventually they become the community decision makers. Educating the community in "Sustainability" is a primary objective and the New Smyrna Beach Middle School has proven, with a little guidance and support anything is possible when we work together.
